An overview of sober living housing
A relatively new concept in the addiction treatment and recovery is sober living housing. It originated on the US’ west coast but there are now numerous facilities in every state in the country. This type of residency is a transitional environment geared to recovering alcoholics and drug addicts who are in between the addiction treatment institution and society as well as being in the early stages of the recovery process. These facilities are also referred to as “halfway houses” although those homes are more suited for individuals who have recently been released from prison and are trying to re-build their lives.
Description and requirements
Sober living housing is typically geared to the recovering alcoholic or drug addict and is structured around certain programs and recovery therapies in order to help in the transition process. This type of residency provides their tenants with more recovery tools than what other transitional environments typically do. In addition to this, there are there are rules and guidelines that the tenant has to adhere to.
The 5 most common are that no alcohol and drugs are allowed, residents must undergo random alcohol and drug testing, they must attend either AA or NA meetings (mandatory), they must be responsible and pay their bills on time, and they must be generally accepted by the peers of the sober living housing. There are other requirements imposed at these facilities but they will differ from one residency to the next.
The Delray Recovery Center
Our addiction treatment and recovery center now has on-site sober living housing for the client who is not quite confident enough in their sobriety and needs further recovery therapy before returning home to their communities. There is no time limit imposed and the reason is because certain individuals require more time in the transition process than others. During this time, they will also learn more relapse prevention techniques in order to handle living substance-free for life when they return home to their communities.
The Delray Recovery Center requires that any client who wishes to stay in our sober living housing has undergone one of our in-patient addiction treatment and recovery programs before entering this residential facility. We can help you in the transition process so that you will be confident in your sobriety and not have the fear of relapsing when you return to society. This out-patient program also enables the client to continue their education on the outside or pursue gainful employment.
